70-100 day Atlantic row of Katie Spotz
Driving east a couple of days ago I heard an NPR radio story about Katie Spotz's "Row for Water" project, including an interview with her. Her plan to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean without a chase boat gives new meaning to "open water rowing". Check it out at Row for Water.

Friday/Saturday practice, revisited
There is concern that your "preference" for Friday vs. Saturday practice does not indicate your availability/willingness to attend either day. The purpose of this new survey is to help Rick and Joy select the day which most people CAN and WILL attend, regardless their preference.

HOTO news
VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED: CLICK HERE
ROW DOWN/CHOW DOWN: CLICK HERE TO LET US KNOW IF YOUR COMING
From Joy:
This is the plan for the row down on Friday. We have ten 8+s and six 4+s to row down to PNC Park, not including the sculling boats. The junior team is taking down all of the fours, so that leaves the masters teams responsible for the eights. Therefore we need looking at needing 80-90 people to come down on Friday. We have a portion of this number committed from the Evening Masters and Beginner/Intermediate teams, but we need a large number more. Therefore, if you are racing in a TRRA shell please make it a priority to be at the row down or else you might not have a boat to race in the next day. ATTENTION SCULLER: If you are racing in any sculling event (quad, double, single) you are responsible for getting that boat and your oars down to PNC Park.
If possible, it is a good idea to drop a few cars off at PNC Park to transport groups back to the boathouse after each row. I will be at the Boathouse organizing the row down and handing out dinner vouchers. Rick will be at PNC Park organizing equipment down there. We will be starting at 4:30pm and sending boats down as enough people arrive to fill them. If you are able to do a couple of trips rowing down that is great. Thank you in advance for helping us get your equipment moved for race day, and let me know if you have any questions.
EQUIPMENT LIST (click here to view/download)
Please familiarize yourself with which equipment you will be using in your race(s) to help things run more smoothly on Saturday
HEAT SHEETS (click here to view/download)
Please help insure that things run smoothly by knowing your schedule. You'll want to meet at least an hour before your race to allow a good 45 minutes to launch and get to start.

WHEN/WHERE TO GO SATURDAY
Everything should be pretty similar to last year:
• park in the lot between the stadiums (see signage, volunteers and trailers)
• coxswains meeting at 6:30 am, near the finish line
• EMM’s first races are 8:05 am. Meet at 7:00 am, launch approx. 7:15
• there should be a volunteer check in table, probably somewhere around the finish line.
• there will be an EMM tent. Don’t know exactly where yet. Maybe you can help set it up?

Joy's torture techniques
Joy has been asked about suggested self-torture...er, circuit training exercises. Here are her thoughts/suggestions:
"The purpose of circuits is to keep your heart rate up and do light loads with more reps. 45 sec on 15 off is easiest to keep track of but you can go up to doing 1:15 on with 15 off if you want. I've tried to explain the reason for them so that you can pick an exercise you enjoy to match the purpose. I'm happy to talk to anyone about specifics."

- Quad strength - back squat/leg press
- Oblique Abs (sides) - ex: cherry pickers, side planks, penguins
- Pectoral strength (not really used in rowing, but needed to even out your body's strength & who knows you might catch a killer crab one day and need these muscles) - ex: bench press/incline bench press/push-ups
- Quad & Hip strength - Lunges (with or without weight)
- Lower Abs - ex: leg lifts, scissor kicks
- Calf/lower leg strength/Ankle flexibility - calf raises, toe kicks
- Quad power - ex: jump squats
- High Abs - ex: crunches, scullers, planks
- To keep heart rate up - jump rope, run in place
- Lat strength - lat pulls/seated row, dumbbell row, pull-ups
- Quad endurance - wall sit
- Lower Back - ex: superman or back lift (using weight machine with or without weight - don't do them for speed & ask me if you want a demo)

HOTC room reservations& other "stuff"
FINALLY!!
We know have a block of rooms at the Days Inn in Lakewood, Oh. The hotel is less than 5 miles from the race. There is the standard comp. breakfast fare and there is no charge for parking. All rooms are queen doubles so sharing is an option. Price is $69.00 plus tax.
The regatta website has rooms that must be booked by SAT. SEP. 5th. The rate is $98.00plus tax and $8.00 parking. Breakfast is additional.
So, there are the choices.
Here are the addresses you will need to MapQuest or Google.
1. Three Rivers Rowing
300 Waterfront Drive
Pittsburgh, Pa. 15222
2. Days Inn Cleveland Lakewood 216-226-4800 Res. are under TRR [ Three Rivers Rowing ]
12019 Lake Ave.
West 117th St & Clifton Blvd.
Cleveland, OH. 44107
3. 1948 Carter Road
Cleveland, OH. 44113
There are directions on the Regatta website. We all need to fill out waivers as this race is not sponsored by USRowing. I will have them available at all practices from now until the race.
The " official team-griller", Bob Ryan, will once again be making an appearance at the race. It looks as though it will be a fairly early finish so we can grab a burger or hot dog before hitting the road.
Let me know if there is any interest in a team dinner on Friday night. This time I would like to have a tentative head-count. There are always factors to consider[ like the monsoon some encountered on the way to PHL. ] So, give me your thoughts and/or suggestions because, we are a work-in-progress

Quaker parking
Saturday, August 1, 2009:
There is no general parking for the regatta in either the upper or lower sections of the Canoe Club lot. This area is reserved for boat trailers and cars carrying boats on top. There will be no exceptions to this rule [apart from regatta officials, and we know who they are.]. No other vehicles will be permitted, so don't plan to appeal to the good nature of the folks patrolling the lot [they are good natured, but you will lose!] General parking for the regatta is at two sites - the lot just before the grandstand at the finish line, and the area up the hill just before the Canoe Club. Look for a left exit off the Kelly Drive, go up the hill to the stop sign, turn right and park in that area. You can then walk down the hill and across to the Canoe Club launching area. These two options are for all vehicles other than trailers and cars with boats on top.

FUN FRIDAY!
From Joy:
It's that time of year! Tomorrow, we have our first Fun Friday row of
the year. The weather is supposed to be perfect, so we're hoping for
a big turnout for our first installment of this summertime tradition.
For those of you unfamiliar with Fun Friday, here are the specifics:
- Small boats (singles, doubles, pairs, novice quads with a competent
bow person)
- Race over distances between 500 and 1000 m
- Approximately 5 pieces with at least 5 minutes rest between
- Boats begin in stages with slower rowers starting first and faster
rowers starting later
- Cheerful dispositions a must; no mooning your fellow competitors
Please be under the 40th Street Bridge no later than 6:00, ready to
begin the first piece (a warm-up piece) at that time. All will finish
by 7 a.m.

All will finish
by 7 a.m.
Please direct any questions to James Gordish or Steve Abbot.

Buy a pie, help a refugee

From Nick (April 30)
Many of you may know that I along with my wife Elaine and daughters Danielle, and Bethany (the rower) will be participating on a mission team to provide teaching and medical care to Sudanese refugees this July. We will interact with refugees in Kenya as well as Southern Sudan. Our local contact has big plans to establish a church, orphanage and school in his village in Southern Sudan. It is very exciting to be taking part in helping refugees return home (many have been in exile for almost 20 years). We will actually get to participate in the land dedication ceremony for the village.
In order to raise funds for food and medical supplies, our team is baking double crusted, 10 inch pies for delivery in time for Memorial Day weekend. If interested, I can deliver them to the boathouse Friday May 22nd or Saturday May 23rd.
Choose from: Apple, Cherry, Blueberry or Strawberry. Pies are $12 each, 3 for $30 (Strawberry are an additional $3 each). Cash or checks payable to “cash,” at time of order or on delivery.
If interested, click here to let me know:
1. How many of each type of pie.
2. What date you’d like delivery.
Other tax deductible donations can be made to “St. Philip’s Church” with “Africa” in the note.
Thanks for your support, and see you at practice!
Nick

Towels
From Anne Jane:
Hi All
Last year we collected old towels from folks to be used for wiping down the boats after coming in. At the end of last season someone took them home to launder them but the towels never reappeared. How about if we all rummage through our closets and come up with another batch?
We set up a little system to ensure we had fairly clean towels available: once the towels got really smelly, someone from either EMM or our team will take a batch home, launder them and bring them back to the boathouse. There was an old clothes hamper for the dirty towels and a blue tub in which to put the clean towels near racks with the fours. I will make sure these are still around so we can get this process going again.

2009 EMM Volunteer Tracking (for Linda L.)
Jen Sunday has devised a new on-line Volunteer Tracking tool that, I think, will make it even easier to keep track of our team volunteer hours, especially now since we have more individual projects. We also plan on displaying our Team volunteer activity on our display board at the Lambert Boathouse…for all to see and promote more volunteering throughout the club. Please check out the volunteer tracking tool and e-mail me (Linda L.) & Jen your comments and suggestions. We’d like to use the new tracking system monthly and begin in May by turning in our volunteer hours in April. Also, let us know if you have any problem using the link provided.
Friends like you make volunteering at TRR as much fun as rowing!

EMM Volunteer Opportunities (for Linda L.)
Decide fast…this is next weekend!
The LLBean Store in Ross Park Mall on McKnight Road will be hosting a Spring Sports Weekend from Fri., April 17 to Mon., April 20 and have invited TRRA to attend and promote our organization. Here’s a description of the event…
Some of you have asked about volunteering for the Scholastic Sprints. Jesse is the coordinator for this event, and he told Rick that their volunteer needs are covered at this point.
I received a few requests for volunteers from Rick to pass on to the team. If you’re interested in helping out with any of these projects, please contact me llang@medrad.com and I’ll schedule it with Rick who can provide you with more details.
CORPORATE COXSWAIN REP (1 person probably)
Rick will be sending an email out to all high school and college teams in an effort to compile a list of coxswains that want to get paid and work for corporate teams this summer. This person would be the contact for these individuals to get in touch with. The person would then compile the list of those interested with their contact info and give back to Rick so he can provide the corporate teams with a working list of individuals who might be available for them to contact.
GAS DUTY (1 person)
We need a person to check (at least weekly) the gas supply for launches and take any empty cans to a gas station to be filled. This person would be more than welcome to use the TRRA truck for this duty.
ORGANIZE DISPLAY BOARDS (1 person)
I’ll give someone with some creative bones in their body the option to organize the display boards (especially at Lambert) however they feel fit. I can certainly provide ideas, but there is no one way of doing it. I just would like them to look pretty. Jen suggested to me that we post volunteer hours that the different teams have done as a sort of competition on one of these boards. I think that’s a great idea. The boards are beginning to look a bit ratty and I’d love to spruce them up a bit.

“We are looking for groups associated with the outdoors to set up tables and promote their organizations. There will be clinics and demonstrations lined up for the customers to enjoy as well as a 30% discount on boats, bikes, tents and selected associated accessories. Please let me know by Wed., April 15 if you can be available Saturday or Sunday, also if you have any suggestions for our presentation. I’ll be working with Jen Sunday & Rick to organize.
The event will run from our stores opening hours to closing hours (Sat 9am-7pm & Sun 11am-6pm). We will be flexible to groups setting up for the entire day and half day as well.
We will have activities for children to encourage families to interact as well.
We want to work together to get everyone to enjoy the great outdoors!!!!!

Hampton HS fund raiser
Message from Chelsea:
Hello everyone!!
On Tuesday, April 28th, the Hampton High School Rowing Team is sponsoring a basketball game against the Steelers. A selected group of Steelers will be coming in play a fun game of basketball, be available for pictures as well as be around to sign autographs. Myself along with several HHS teachers and coaches have been selected as the team to play against the Steelers. Although we will not know until the night before or even the night of who will be coming to play, the list does include big time players such as Big Ben, Troy, J. Harrison, Willie Parker and many more. Some players will also have the option of coming to make an individual appearance for photos and autographs but might not play. Since Big Ben currently lives in Hampton, we are truly pushing for him to make an appearance!!
The game will begin around 7:30pm that evening. You can purchase tickets from me at $7 regular admission or $10 VIP tickets which get you in the lower levels, center court. The game will take place at the HHS gym in Allison Park, PA. We will also be doing raffles for autographed Steelers products throughout the evening.
If you are interested in purchasing a ticket, please let me know (chelseaprior@threeriversrowing.org). We expect to sell out of tickets sooner rather than later! This will definitely be a fun-filled evening!
Thank you all in advance for your support! Please feel free to pass thisinformation along to any friends/family/co-workers who might be interested in attending.
